COURSE NUMBER: MAT 102

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS: 3

PREREQUISITES: ASSET score of ALGE 50-55 or ALGI 39-48 or ALGC 30-37; or COMPASS test score of ALGE 53-100; or successful completion with a grade of C or better on GTC's Mat 101 - Beginning Algebra.

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes the following topics: properties of numbers; fundamental operations with algebraic expressions; polynomials; systems of equations; ratio and proportion; factoring; functions; graphs; solutions of linear inequalities; and linear and quadratic equations.

REQUIRED TEXT: Lial, Hornsby,McGinnis, Introductory and Intermediate Algebra, Third Edition, Pearson/A ddison Wesley. At the Greenville Tech Bookstore, this text comes shrink-wrapped with the required Access Code to use the My Math Lab website.

INSTRUCTOR'S NOTE: You must be available to take a proctored mid-term and final exam at the Greenville Tech testing center or an approved testing center of another college. The dates for the mid-term and the final exam are posting in each section. If buying a used book, you will also need to purchase an access code for My Math Lab There are multiple sections for MAT 102 on-line. Please contact the Greenville Tech Mathematics Departmentat (864) 250-8233 for your specific instructor information or for more details on this course. The Mid-term exam and Final Exam testing will be in the testing center on the Barton campus with paper and pencil.

DISTANCE LEARNING ATTENDANCE POLICY: In order to avoid access denied status, students should make contact with their instructor within the first three days of class. Attendance in an online class is defined by correspondence and the student is expected to demonstrate, at least once a week, that he/she is actively involved and is corresponding in the class. Examples of activities that can be used to demonstrate this involvement include, but not limited to the following: posting/receiving e-mails, participating in online course discussions via bulletin boards and chat rooms, and completing and submitting course assignments.

Students not meeting the minimum attendance/correspondence requirement may be withdrawn with a grade of "W" or "WF" based upon the student's academic standing at the last date of attendance/correspondence. Email through WebCT will be the primary means of communication, especially when the student is having difficulty answering a question or solving an exercise or a problem. For your instructor to help you effectively, please provide as much information as possible when communicating and it is the student's responsibility to check all virtual correspondence (email, bulletin board) regularly.
