CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers basic computer history, theory and applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the operating system. Note: MS Office 2007 is used.

The purchase of the myitlab Training and Assessment software is required to complete this course. If a used book is purchased, the student will be required to purchase myitlab Training and Assessment software and purchase Microsoft Office 2007 separately for successful completion of the course. When purchasing Office 2007 software make sure that it contains the three applications used in this course: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This software can be purchased at an educational discount price at the GTC book store. The MS Office 2007 software is also available in computer labs on each campus. For successful use of myitlab Training and Assessment software, it is recommended that students have a Windows XP (Home or Professional Edition), or Microsoft Windows Vista on their home computers. Windows 7 will not be supported until January 2010. Students with Windows 2000 SP4 have also been able to use the software without encountering problems. Note: Pearson Education does not support Windows 98, Windows ME, MAC and Unix operating systems. Myitlab requires the use of Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8. Additionally, it is not recommended to use a dial-up modem with myitlab Training and Assessment software. A student access code for myitlab Training and Assessment software is required and redeemable one time only and the user account is available for 12 months after registration. Additionally, it is recommended that students have headphones for use with myitlab?s audio-visual files and guide d-assistance. An online student may be required to take exams in a campus computer lab or in a proctored environment DISTANCE LEARNING ATTENDANCE POLICY: In order to avoid access denied status, students should make contact with their instructor within the first three days of class. Attendance in an online class is defined by correspondence and the student is expected to demonstrate, at least once a week, that he/she is actively involved and is corresponding in the class. Examples of activities that can be used to demonstrate this involvement include, but not limited to the following: posting/receiving e-mails, participating in online course discussions via bulletin boards and chat rooms, and completing and submitting course assignments. Students not meeting the minimum attendance/correspondence requirement may be withdrawn with a grade of "W" or "WF" based upon the student's academic standing at the last date of attendance/correspondence. Email through WebCT will be the primary means of communication, especially when the student is having difficulty answering a question or solving an exercise or a problem.
