How
do College Online courses work?
In addition to the course pre-requisites, College
Online students are encouraged to be familiar with the internet
and attaching documents to email. All registered students are instructed
to access the College Online URL (www.college-online.com). There they find a 'hotlink'
to request their password and userid to the course web. The courses
are textbook, online-text, and project-based.
To clarify, the entire course
is online. We have an asynchronous virtual classroom, and the "chat"
or discussion is in text format, but it is saved in conference form for
the duration of the term. Students often use the virtual classroom
conversations as study aids.
The online syllabus is basically
a series of hot links made accessible on a weekly basis. The link
explains assignments, expectations, and requirements. Instructors
provide details on submitting assignments. In addition, there are hotlinks which enable students to
email instructors directly. Many instructors use virtual field trips
and other unique Internet assignments.
In the majority of the online
courses, tests are completed in a timed, one-time-accessible, online
format. Students are scheduled a date to "go to" the test
link. Assignments are usually submitted via attachments. Some College Online
courses do require in-person visits to campus testing sites, but
a student is made aware of those dates initially. Textbooks can be purchased in person or online from our Bookstore.

How
much time will I need to devote to a course?
Accreditation requirements normally require that a 3.0-semester hour course
have 45 contact (class meeting) hours. The recommended study time for
any class is 1-2 hours outside of class for each hour in class. This formula means
that you should commit a total of about 90 hours (or more) to each
course you take. Since online courses are offered in 15-week, 10-week and 7
1/2-week formats, you will need to adjust your study time accordingly.

Go to the Course Schedules Page

Will
my college credits from another school transfer to GTC?
A transcript from the school you attended needs to accompany your
application for admission. The Greenville Tech Transcript Evaluator's
Office will determine which courses may be used for credit toward
the degree, diploma, or certificate you have selected at Greenville
Tech.

What
if I need some help?
GTC staff is here to help you. Your instructor will provide assistance.
Many students find a study-buddy among their classmates. Computer lab assistants
at the Greenville Tech Open Labs

The Writing Center, Math Lab, and other campus resources. See your

Will
I ever have to come to GTC?
On-Campus Testing:
Most
Videocourse instructors require on-campus, proctored tests. Online
instructors have the option to schedule on-campus, proctored tests
or online tests via the internet. Teleclass instructors schedule
tests during the class meetings. Read your course materials to find out if campus visits are required.
Proctored tests are taken in person at the Testing
Center or an Open Lab. Take your drivers license and ID with you when you go to the testing site.
On-Campus Speeches:
Public Speaking (SPC 205) instructors require on-campus
attendance throughout the semester. Dates of this
mandatory attendance are scheduled ahead of time and are announced by the instructor. Speeches must be given in person, on campus. Students who cannot attend the required speech dates should not register for the course.
On-Campus and Off-Campus Performances:
Introduction to Theatre (THE 101) instructors require on-campus attendance for one performance of that semester's departmental theatre production. Dates of this mandatory attendance are scheduled and announced by the instructor. Students are also required to see one show off-campus, subject to approval by the instructor.

What
if I've never taken a college course before?
First, you need to complete an Application for Admission either online
or in person at one of our four campuses, Main (Barton),
Greer, Brashier,
or Northwest. If you have
not taken a college-level course before, you will need to take a Placement
Test. An Admissions Officer will help you through the initial process,
and then an Advisor will
register you for the appropriate course.
